Meet Angelique Kieser - Shift Brewer

Meet the Team: Angelique Kieser - Darling Brew Shift Brewer

Next up in our Meet the #DBcrew series, we chatted to Shift Brewer Angelique Kieser about her meandering journey to this point in her career. Before joining the team she got her BA in architectural studies, travelled to Oman, and worked as a production manager manufacturing stainless steel field kitchens for the SANDF.
It was around this time that she started studying toward a diploma in brewing at the Institute of Brewing and Distiling and realised that this was something she truly loved.

"Knowing what you want to do for the rest of your life straight out of high school, was not a gift I had," Angelique confesses. “Towards the end of 2020, I had the opportunity to start a small craft brewery. However, due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, we were unable to obtain the licencing we needed. I then started working as a brand developer for a technology start-up, and it was during this time that I met Tewie (Managing Director) and had the chance to get a foot in the door as a trainee brewer at Darling Brew! After a few months, I applied for a permanent position and now they are stuck with me!”

Our very own Rogue Pony was actually one of the first beers that got her interested in craft beers! DB’s consistency and innovation as a long-time player in the industry was something that drew Angelique to the company.

"Being part of this brewery, getting to hone my skills while learning new ones and trying new things is great, and it is a very well-designed and equipped brewery. You know you have an amazing team when you don’t dread Mondays. We have a vibrant, diverse team with good synergy! It’s great to be able to work with people who are motivated and eager to achieve goals while delivering top quality and good vibes.”

Interestingly, Angelique had never set foot in Darling until she started working at the brewery. Originally from Pretoria, she was used to farm life but nothing prepared her for the much gentler pace of life in Darling. While the slow and steady rhythm of life along the West Coast took some getting used to initially, she adores the town and the experiences the West Coast has to offer.

“The beach at Yzerfontein is a great place for walking, especially towards Langebaan. You can keep going for hours and might even spot a seal or ostrich. The West Coast National Park is a good place to take a drive, especially in flower season.”

A woman of many hobbies, Angelique is a curious person by nature. When she isn’t studying, experimenting in the kitchen, or playing Skyrim (yes, folks she’s a gamer), she loves to learn and is endlessly fascinated by many topics. Beer is something that never disappoints and she enjoys discovering new brewing styles.
As such, she knows the ins and outs of the Darling brews inside out so it’s no surprise she has a hard time choosing one favourite!

“Choosing a favourite DB beer is a challenge! I prefer bold beers that are big on flavour so our Warlord, Arrowhead and 4X4 BraaiPA are all personal favourites. It really all depends on the day! But if I had to choose only one, it would have to be Warlord. It has a deeply complex flavour balancing the big hop character and bitterness with the malty backbone. All without being heavy, while the aroma is reminiscent of tropical fruit, pine and citrus from the hops. For an imperial IPA it is a very easy drinking beer, so mind the kick!”
