Low-hanging fruit

In the tradition of Belgian style wit beer, or wheat beer, the scope for innovation and experimentation is wide. The silky-smooth mouthfeel and gentle, creamy palate of the beer somehow lends itself to the imagination of playful brewers.

The original Bone Crusher is modelled on a wit beer with hint of coriander and citrus. This is a pretty common combination, and it’s downright delicious which is why we chose to pursue this line when creating it.

The proof of the beer is in the drinking s to speak, and Bone Crusher is one of our most popular brews. It’s second only to the Slow lager in sales. We thought it was time to push the envelope a little to see what could be done with a quality wit been.

A little-known, but popular Belgian variation on wit beers is to brew them with seasonal fruit. The tradition is so established, they even have names for different styles based on the fruit used. A wit beer brewed with cherries is known as a ‘kriek’, a seasonal and popular treat in traditional circles.

With cherry blossoms and perfect beer dreams in his head, our brewer ordered in a batch of organic sour cherry juice to play with. Adding this to the boil with hops for a regular Bone Crusher brew produced a beautiful pink beer redolent of cherry on both nose and palate.

Cherry is a welcome addition to the Bone Crusher Bloodline. We started with a limited run which is appearing on shelves at selected Spar Tops around the country. Stock is limited, so don’t miss out. We will brew and can again closer to December to make sure there is a festive, fruity beast in the fridge for year-end revelries.
