Happy Earth Day, Darlings! This important holiday is celebrated on the 22nd of April every year, which marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. On this day annually, 1 billion+ people in 192+ countries around the globe participate in activities to draw attention to the urgency of the climate crisis and environmental degradation, and the need for immediate action.
The theme for this year's Earth Day is Restore Our Earth with a strong focus on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can pave the way for the restoration of the world's ecosystems. And therefore, the theme also rejects the belief that only mitigation and adaptation are the ways to address climate change.
In short - we need to come together as a species to put our brains and technology to good use. It's time to put on our thinking caps and come up with solutions that go beyond the obvious.
At Darling Brew, we agree wholeheartedly with this vital sentiment. As Africa’s first carbon-neutral brewery, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. In addition to carbon offsetting and consumption tracking, we have also implemented a series of green initiatives in the brewery that includes water-efficient fittings, waterless urinals, ongoing recycling, and food waste management, as well as the use of upcycled furniture and recycled wood in the brewery and taste room area.
We are excited to progress on this journey; going carbon neutral was a massive step for us, but certainly not the last. As we plot our way forward, we would like to invite all the members of our community to do the same in their personal capacity.

Our goal is not to spread fear; we merely want to drive home the message that climate change is very real and that the time to participate in the movement to make a difference is now. Start small - conserve water, limit food waste, take your own bags to the store, compost your kitchen waste, refuse single-use plastic. These changes may seem insignificant to you at the moment, but when we all start doing our little bit in small, manageable increments, we are paving the way for the change that is needed. Together we can make a difference!
