The Darling Brew Extreme returned for its fifth year running
The much-anticipated mountain bike challenge, the Darling Brew Extreme, took place for its fifth consecutive year on the 26th of May.
The DBX18 mountain bike challenge, together with Retail Capital, offered four routes to choose from. Each route was named after one of Darling Brew’s quaffable brews and made use of a combination of single track, jeep track and farm roads in and around Darling. The routes ranged from the super endurance long course for experienced MTB enthusiasts, to the less challenging short ride for the family, novices and youngsters.
The race started and finished at Darling Brew, where the Brewery offered riders and spectators a relaxed ambiance with family friendly surroundings, ample secure parking, locally brewed craft beer, entertainment and tasty eats. This year there was awesome prizes to be won and the Stone Jets entertained the crowds before and after the prize giving.
The dates for DBX19 is the weekend of the 25th and 26th of May 2019.
PARTICIPANTS AND SPECTATORS
As with any big sporting event comes a large number of spectators. We are happy to say that there was a tremendous growth in spectators this year:
2014: over 800
2015: capped at 1500
2016: 1500 riders and 500 spectators
2017: 2000 riders and 800 spectators
2018: 2200 riders and 1800 spectators

OBJECTIVES OF THE DARLING BREW EXTREME
Our overall goal is to give riders an unforgettable adventure experience through the various routes of the remaining four percent of the Renosterveld left in the Western Coast.
With this event we showed riders the best the area has to offer. The routes followed unsurpassed views, breath-taking scenery and close encounters with the area’s fauna and flora as riders’ wind through the panoramic Darling and surrounds.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES:
This year our community project of choice was DReSS, a recycling swap shop based close to the brewery. DBX donated 3 bicycles for Darling youths to ‘buy’ with their recycling collections. One of these lucky kids also received their well-deserved bike on the day of the race. DReSS was on site during the event to recycle riders and spectators valuable waste. Participants was also allowed to contribute further to this good cause and an amount of over R5000 was raised.

CONCLUSION:
We are happy to say that DBX18 was again a very successful event. Not only did we get more riders, but the number of spectators almost doubled. The event has become so popular that we decided to make it two, one day races next year to be able to accommodate more riders and spectators. We also decided that we would like to add our first trail run.We would just like to thank Wesgro for supporting the event.
