Darling Brew Extreme 2017

ROUTES

The DBX17 will have four routes to choose from ranging from the super endurance long course to the less challenging short ride for the family, novices and youngsters. The four distances will make use of a combination of single track, jeep track and farm roads in and around Darling.

  1. The short 15km route starts in the same direction as the 30km. It has the least elevation and offers a scenic loop of mostly farm roads close to the centre of Darling.
  2. The middle distance of 30km, is a brand new route. More suited to riders who do not fancy  the big hills, but still enjoy  good scenery. We recommend this one for riders who did the short route last year, as it is a bit further and will give you a taste of only a small section of singletrack. The 30km starts in the opposite direction to the 45km on the south side of Darling.
  3. The middle distance of 45km, is one of the classics and is more suited to riders who enjoy a good section of singletrack without too much climbing. Most of the ride will be on Wolwefontein farm`s MTB trail. Cut off (Wolwefontein after the reeds) at 11H00 after 15km (2 hours)
  4. The 75km route will challenge the experienced endurance riders. It features a change this year with the route following a  figure of eight loop: passing the Brewery (Start/Finish) halfway through the ride. This new route will debut with a mystery section, offering riders the unique opportunity to test their hill climbing skills. All riders accepting this challenge will be rewarded with the best view over Darling. This vantage point is not accessible to the public. Cut off (at Grain Silos) at 12H00 after 45km (4 hours)

Bone Crusher

Distance: 75kmElevation: 1550m Waterpoints: 5 (12km, 30km, 40km, 50km, 63km-beer, 66km)

The first part of the 75km route starts out at a fast pace through the olive trees on the farm Het Bos and heads towards Klipberg and the first water point of the day at the green tanks (14km). This section gives you some time to warm up before the awesome singletrack on the farm Wolwefontein. By the time you return to the green tanks water point (33km), you will be well up and running. Then, after climbing the side of Klipberg, a fast flat track next to the railway line will take you back to the start (but not the end) at Darling Brewery where you can indulge in a quick pit stop at 40km. A cut off time will be incorporated!!

The real climbing starts at the second half of the route. After crossing the railway line and passing through the Duckitt Orchid farm, a mystery destination awaits… Riders will enjoy a stunning and spectacular view of the Swartland before attempting a fast and steep descent down Hendri’s Hill towards the second water point on the farm,Glen Frank (50km). Some more climbing awaits up Frans Steyn hill and then the route goes down through Windmill Alley. The last significant elevation is at the top of the famous Bone Crusher, where you will be rewarded with a free beer taster. With about 10km left, a downhill into the town takes you to the welcome finish at the Brewery.

Long Claw

Distance: 45km  Elvation: 700m Waterpoints: 2 (12km, 30km)

The riders of the 45km route are fortunate to have a good section of farm road where they can warm up before they reach the start of farm Het Bos before traversing round the bottom of Klipberg and reaching the green tanks water point (14km). Now the riders can test their singletrack ability, starting with an amazingly sculpted downhill section through the blue gum trees.

The course returns to the water point, after a lot of debatable fun on Wolwefontein MTB Trail. Then follows a final short climb across the side of Klipberg. The route back to the brewery and finish, is relatively flat, but you will have still have had a good enough workout to enjoy a refreshingly cold beer at the end.

Blood Serpent

Distance: 30km  Elevation: 300m  Waterpoints: 2 (11km, 21km)

The new 30km route has been added to the distances on offer. This route requires a reasonable amount of fitness from the rider. It promises a decent workout for those riders who are not quite up to the challenges of the longer routes. This route starts out in a southerly direction and features two climbs and some singletrack before heading back to the finish.

Slow Beer

Distance: 15km  Elvation: 200m Waterpoints: 1 (11km)

This route has been upgraded to ensure more fun for the novice and family riders. The first half of the route is a slow climb to the highest point but do not despair, you will make a 180 degree turn and head back towards the finish via the farm roads and some easy singletrack.
